Hot Skills that make you Employable
School education provides one with the only basic knowledge and does not make you ready for high paying jobs. College education provides a strong knowledge base in classic literature or advanced level of maths / science and made one ready for the job market until a few decades ago. However, the requirements for today’s job market has changed and nowadays the leaders from the industry keep complaining that the current curriculum is outdated and that graduates lack skills and are “not employable”.
Why is there a gap in education and job market?
The global economy is ever changing. Jobs or careers that were considered to be stable a few years ago are fast disappearing due to automation and new jobs are emerging every day as a result of technological advances.
Most of the new jobs that have come up recently did not exist a few years ago and will not be around after a few years! For example, Uber / Ola did not exist until a few years ago and automated driving cars will soon make Uber / Ola non-existent. Advances in drone technology will change the way food is delivered to your home from a restaurant or when you order items from online websites.
Gone are the days when folks retired from the same job they got into after college. One would need to take up different Jobs / Careers in his lifetime.
How do we make our self employable in this ever changing world?
One would need to choose a job / career in a field that has lot of job opportunities / demand. Employer demand for STEM qualifications and skills are high, and will continue to increase in the future. Currently, 75 per cent of jobs in the fastest growing industries require workers with STEM skills. To be competitive, the workforce will need people who can adapt to a changing workplace.
Given below are the job openings in STEM from the State of Oregon Employment Department
What is STEM?
STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM, students develop key skills that include problem solving, creativity, critical analysis, teamwork, independent thinking, initiative, communication and digital literacy.
STEM jobs are here to stay and they play a vital role in the economy today and will continue to be important into the future. While STEM jobs tend to require higher levels of education, they also tend to pay well.
What about some of us who want to pursue a career in pure Sciences or Mathematics? Let’s see how STEAM and STREAM would make you ready for the same job market.
STEAM - Inclusion of Arts
The inclusion of Arts in the STEM approach is a step ahead in the education. Using STEAM ('A' refers to Arts) methodology, a teacher connects critical areas of learning with art practices and design principles for holistic development. Such methodology exposes the students to new domains and removes limitations of innovation and creativity.
Put simply, the students start looking at the science and engineering problems from an artistic point-of-view and deliver the solution accordingly.
STREAM – for the extra push
STREAM adds one more layer to STEM and STEAM: Reading and wRiting. Advocates of STREAM see literacy as an essential part of a well-rounded curriculum, as it requires critical thinking as well as creativity.
Soft Skills - Adding more power to STREAM
If everybody would have similar skills in STEM or STREAM, will it be sufficient to make you stand out and get noticed in the job market? No, then what is the solution.
Developing Soft Skills that would help you to make optimum use of the knowledge you have gained through education in STREAM is the magic wand that will make you ready for the job market and prepare you for a successful career.
